ABOUT

MEET Łucja Helena Jastrzębska
Growing up in a Polish family, the essence of my Polishness was and remains an important factor for me. Watching my parent's hard work ethic inspired me to achieve only the best in school, where I discovered my interest in philosophy and women's rights. This led me to study a BA in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics at KCL along with an MA in Human Rights at UCL.
Why Helena Maroszek?
Let's face it, my name is super hard to pronounce. Hence, I created a name that is kinder to the tongue whilst staying true to my roots.
Helena, being my middle name, it was only natural for me to utilise variations of my Polish culture.
Maroszek, being my grandparent's surname, I wanted to maintain close proximity to them after their passing.
Normalising skin abnormalities
A further part of my identity is my skin. I was born with port-wine stain birthmarks, which I am extremely proud of. They have made me part of the person that I am and were the start of my philosophical stances and the importance of an individual's bodily autonomy.
Though skin does not define a person, it is part of making a person who they are with the challenges life may throw at them. Therefore, I am passionate that society should better represent skin 'abnormalities' to normalise them as it is part of human biology. But most importantly, an individual should come to love and appreciate their own skin!
Why a blog?
Through posting blogs, I aim to initiate thought-provoking ideas in people's minds to enable everyone to think about challenging ideas. I mainly focus on women's rights as well as normalising skin abnormalities as they are issues that are dear to my heart.
They are also issues that are greatly misunderstood and brushed under the carpet in our society. This is not to de-evaluate the multitude of other human rights issues individuals face in society, but these are the topics I feel I can contribute to whilst giving them justice.
I urge others to help society to understand human rights issues that I do not tackle as the best arguments can be put forward by those who have experienced them.
